Routine maintenance is important for engine care, so we need to know whether to use non detergent oil or detergent oil to care for the engines we that we rely on so much.  Even though detergent oil has not been widely used for many decades, it is the predominant type of oil used today.  Whether you choose to use detergent oil or choose non detergent oil, it will depend on the engine manufacturer’s recommendations.

The amount of detergent included in detergent oil is often up for debate with many engine oil experts.  There are mechanics that disagree on the chemical content of detergent oil, some say that it is not present, but a chemical that prevents carbon deposits from coagulating together and forming oil sludge.  The oil filter would then remove the bits of carbon before they became a problem for the performance of the engine.

Non detergent oil may be used for more than simply engine lubricant, non detergent oil may be used in a wide variety of uses, like as a transmission oil and as a gear box oil.  It is always best to check with your vehicle’s manufacturer for recommendations on the best engine lubricants to use.  If you have access to an Internet connection, you can get almost any information about your engine, motor, or transmission online, direct from the manufacturers.

Sometimes, there are actually too many choices for lubrication applications, which includes high detergent and non detergent oil.  Higher amounts of detergent are present in high detergent motor oil as one may suspect.  One way for people to clean the inside of engines is to engage the use of a high detergent oil.  HD oil is sometimes used as a flushing oil before oil changes, but this varies to a high degree on the engine specifications and the preferences of the automotive technician.  Instead of using a more harsh engine cleaner, some like to use motor oil with a higher level of detergent because the cleaning process is more subtle and will be less likely to separate chunks of carbon that could harm engine lubrication.  What ever your chosen solution for reducing your engine sludge, be advised that every solution has advantages and disadvantages and that to maximize the life of your engine, you need to also maximize your lubrication.
